Happy Birthday, Gray!

I grew up in a family of boys. There were three of us and I was the oldest. So when it came time for Joy and me to have children, we were shooting for a boy. But I missed.

Gray was born on May 8, 2005, and our life hasn’t been the same since. And then just a few short months ago we added little Campbell, making Graycen a big sister.

So at this point I’m 0 for 2 when it comes to having boys. And you know what, THAT’S FINE! I love shopping for the girls, taking Gray to gymnastics and her ball games, obliging her to do ‘photoshoots’, and doing all the other things that girls’ daddies do. (note: check back when she’s a teenager and we’ll see how I feel).

Last night I spent the night with Gray. While she was downstairs before bedtime, I snuck upstairs and built a little fort and made a bed with all of her favorite blankets, and her princess picture book that we made last year at Disney.

When she walked into her bedroom and saw her ‘castle bed’, she said, “It’s BEAUTIFUL!!! Daddy, where did you find a castle bed? Do I get to sleep in there?”

Then Joy told her that I was sleeping in there with her. “Ooooo-kayyyy, so you’re going to be the prince,” she said matter-of-factly.

We read Cinderella and The Little Mermaid, while she held the flashlight. Then we sang Jesus Loves Me and Happy Birthday.

Finally we turned off the flashlight and lamp and laid our heads on the pillow. We listened to her favorite Taylor Swift songs on my iPhone, and as I laid on my side looking over at her, her eyes were closed and her face was covered in the biggest smile I’ve ever seen.

I closed my eyes, with a similar smile, and just seconds later, I felt her hand on my shoulder as she pulled herself close. Ahhhhh, sweet dreams.

Happy birthday, Gray! I hope today is just as magical.

Garrett-thank you so much for sharing that story. It really drives home the point that our children don't need extravagant expensive presents...they just need our time and attention. You and Joy are fabulous parents and Graycen and Campbell are extremely blessed to have the both of you. I so look forward to a moment like this with Kaiya when she turns four!

Best wishes,
katherine

Awwww, what a great dad! Hey Garrett, 3rd time is the charm ;) I wanted a boy and when my first was a girl I couldn't imagine having anything but a girl...so we had a second girl and I was in 'Daddy's little girls' heaven. But we decided it would be nice to have a boy so one more try, and my son was born. I'm happy it was this third try that brought him along because I sometimes think how many times would we have continued to try, and I could just see myself with 6 or 7 girls in the house and myself the only male! Talk about a long wait to get in the bathroom ;)
