What did you do in school?

I don't like homework, but I love education. Last year I had the opportunity to teach the film-based Intro to Photography course at our alma mater. It was a blast, but the responsibility of balancing travel and approximately 18-straight weeks of two-days-a-week classroom time was a challenge.

This year I'm excited about a new opportunity. Next week I'll be going back into the classroom to teach a 5-period intensive on-location portrait workshop for the new digital photography course offered by the School of Journalism and Communication. We'll be talking about basic photography, going on live shoots, returning to the classroom to work on the images, and then turning in images for review and classroom critique. It's going to be great and I can't wait to learn together with the students.

A few days ago we received an email from our friend and former colleague, Ingrid, about an exciting project she's been involved with. Students from the School of Visual Art and Design produced The Secret of the Cave. Filmed on location in Ireland, the feature length DVD was released last week nationwide at several rental chains such as Blockbuster and Movie Gallery as well as at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com.

It was a huge project, but what an exciting experience for the students to be involved in. Last year the film won the Crystal Heart Award at the Heartland Film Festival.

There is no greater teacher than experience...leaving the classroom and going out and putting into practice everything you've learned. Lightbulbs come on and that's when the real learning starts.

Keep searching. Continue learning.
